SALISBURY Cathedral’s choristers are the stars of a new DVD giving a fascinating insight into the lifestyle of the youngsters in the choir.

The Choristers of Salisbury Cathedral takes the viewer through the historical building and features complete performances of two popular anthems, ending with a short performance on the famous Father Willis organ by the cathedral’s organist.

Director of music at the cathedral David Mills is extremely pleased with the DVD. It shows the pleasure the youngsters gain from singing in the choir.

“The original concept was for a simple recruitment tool,” he said.

“However we also recognised the significant interest shown in the life of the choristers both by members of the congregation and by general visitors to the cathedral.

“What comes over is the huge pleasure the children gain from being choristers and what a marvellous team they are working together with the six professional men of the choir.

“The initial response to the film has been extremely positive and I consider it a triumph and in places very moving.”

Producer and editor of the 50-minute DVD Ash Mills said: “Being a chorister at a top cathedral is a fantastically privileged position and I worked hard to produce a film that would demonstrate this whilst capturing the uniquely diverse life in an informative way.

“I was also immediately drawn in by the relaxed and inviting nature of the school.

“Working with David Halls we felt quite strongly that the best way to capture the whole story would be to spend as much time as possible filming the most important events of the year, cherry-picking the best sequences then piecing them together.

“I am incredibly grateful to all those who helped make the DVD and made it such a pleasure to work on.”

The Choristers of Salisbury Cathedral costs £5 and is available from the Cathedral Shop on 01722 555170 or via mail order from giftshop@salcath.co.uk
