POLICE have launched an investigation crops were damaged by metal detectorists in the Monxton area last Sunday night.
"Night Hawking", people using metal detectors illegally, is a Heritage Crime, which is "any offence which harms the value of England’s heritage assets and their settings to this and future generations."
Officers said Night Hawkers rarely hand over any finds that they make, and anyone who finds treasure must report it to the local coroner within 14 days of finding it.
There is an unlimited fine or up to 3 months in prison for not reporting treasure.
There are people and clubs that legitimately take part in metal detecting, but they must have permission to do so.
