A fashion student from Romsey can be sure thousands of young girls will be wearing her designs for many years to come.

Jessica Gray was one of a team of five tasked to restyle the Guides.

The 22-year-old former Hampshire Collegiate School pupil, worked on the new-look uniforms while studying fashion at the Arts University Bournemouth.

The team created a range of clothing for girls aged 10 to 14 including a choice of tops to wear with trousers, leggings, skirts, jeans and shorts as well as a uniform dress and skirt.

The last Guide uniform redesign was in 2000 and feedback from girls was that it was time for a makeover.

To create the designs Jessica and her team spent a year consulting with Guides, who told them they wanted choice, and asked for the clothes to be comfortable and not too ‘boyish’.

Chief Guide Gill Slocombe said: “We are thrilled with the designs –they’re fresh, young and versatile. It was extremely important to select the right designers for this project and I am delighted we selected Arts University Bournemouth as they are clearly committed to ensuring fashion embraces diversity.”

Anne Chaisty, fashion course leader at the university, said it had been a “career defining” project for the five young designers.

“Knowing these designs will be worn with confidence by thousands of Guides across the UK is a huge thrill and a massive honour, not only for the designers but also for our university,” she said.

Jessica is now working in Leicestershire after securing an internship as a design assistant for Asda’s George range.
