A CARDIFF man has been ordered to pay £2000 after pleading guilty to poaching in Whitchurch.
Jeremiah Connors, of St Mellons, Cardiff admitted to the offence while appearing at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on March 10.
The 29-year-old was arrested on February 5 after a member of the public reported seeing a man with his dog chasing after a rabbit off the A34 near to Whitchurch.
He was sentenced to pay £2000 in compensation to Hampshire Constabulary.
Country Watch officer, PC Will Butcher, said: “This gives a clear message that poaching won’t be tolerated in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
“Poaching impacts on both wildlife and landowners, often causing significant damage to the fields.
“By immediately reporting the suspicious activity the local rural community played an important part in assisting us to achieve this outcome.
“I would like to urge members of the public to contact us on 101 should they see any suspicious activity taking place or alternatively they can contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
