A FAMOUS 70s rock band will take to the stage in Whitchurch in May to perform at the town’s annual music festival.

Organisers of the Rockus Festival have confirmed that The Blockheads will headline this year’s event, alongside some of the area’s best-known groups such as Echotape and the Basingstoke-based Treasures.

The Blockheads – best known for their No.1 smash Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick – enjoyed huge success in the late 70s under frontman Ian Dury.

The band, then known as Ian Dury and the Blockheads, released two studio albums in that time, toured the world and supported artists such as Elvis Costello and Lou Reed.

The group split and reformed several times over the next two decades before Dury’s death in 2000.

The remaining Blockheads have continued to tour and will headline Rockus Festival at Longmeadow Indoor Arena on Saturday, 2 May.

Marie Page, who manages the line-up for the event, said: “We’ve got some awesome bands already confirmed and managing to secure The Blockheads shows we’re serious about growing our festival.”
