“SHE has given this town a wonderful service and dedication over the last two decades.”

Those are the words of Whitchurch Mayor Mike Kean, who was joined by councillors past and present last week to say an emotional goodbye to Cathy Burt, the town council clerk who is retiring from her position after 23 years.

Mrs Burt, who first joined the authority as a deputy in 1992 before becoming clerk in 1993, was seen off in style at the Town Hall last Friday with flowers, gifts and a decorative cake depicting a council meeting with all of its members.

The 50-strong group were also joined by another soon-to-beretired stalwart, MP Sir George Young, who said the town “owes Cathy a huge debt” during his last official public appearance as a politician.

Cllr Kean said: “She has certainly helped me throughout my time as Mayor and her knowledge and experience has been vital.

“She has given a wonderful service and dedication not only to me but to the previous chairman, the councillors and the public as well.

“She has carried out the job with flying colours.”

Mrs Burt, who has assisted in projects such as the Whitchurch health check, the cemetery extension and various town centre improvements during her 23 years, thanked everyone for their generosity and kindness.

She said: “I am really looking forward to my retirement, but it is with some sadness after being here for 23 years.

“I have had a lovely time and I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of that.”

Mrs Burt wished “the best of luck” to incoming clerk, Karen Bleazard, who started her new post on Wednesday.
