A number of ex-Lions were in the news this week with Rory Williams taking centre stage with his fifth goal for Southern League Premier Division Gosport Borough.

With another former Lion, Justin Bennett away on honeymoon, Williams has been pushed up front and has responded with a nap hand much to the delight of assistant manager Mick Catlin, the former Lions boss.

Bennett himself is closing in on the all-time scoring record at Privett Park to add to the 200 he netted for the defunct Portway Stadium club in a four year stay.

Claudio Herbert has had a nomadic existence since making his Southern League debut for Andover as a 16-year old, playing at Calne Town, Frome Town and Salisbury City. He has now signed for high flying Wessex Premier Division side Downton and joins a gang of ex-Andover players there including Vinnie Rusher, Nic Turpin, Paul Gulliver, Matt Holmes, Rae Hughes, Matt Scott and Dany Urry.

Another former Lion, Chris Onoufriou has re-signed for Andy Leader's Lymington Town, having previously played for Town last season. In the summer he made the decision to join Blackfield and Langley but after appearing seven times for the Watersiders, he has rejoined Town. Leader was boss at the Portway during the final two seasons before moving to Fleet Town and then Lymington.

Taz Roberts is now with Lymington’s neighbours New Milton while Iain Calder, who had a brief stay at the Portway, has moved from Romsey Town to Totton and Eling. Another player who had a spell at Andover, Lee Burch has signed for Verwood Town from fellow Premier Division side, Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

Finally a name from the Lions’ recemt past, Steve Boston, was on the bench for Petersfield Town on Saturday for their game against Whitchurch United.
