Tidworth's Taylor takes President's Cup
5:00pm Wednesday 21st May 2014 in Sport
Ninety nine members took to the field at Tidworth Garrison GC for the first Honours Board event of the season - the President's Cup - for which the ground staff had prepared the course to perfection.
It was a medal competition for the best net score and players went out ranked by handicap with the only formality that of starters who ensured a smooth progression.
Michael Bygrave's two under net 68, playing off four was an excellent round which included 13 pars and two birdies and he held the lead for an hour when Andy Cook, playing off ten, also returned a two under net 68, but with a better count back on the back nine.
It is always the higher handicappers who can produce the surprises, as was the case with up and coming junior Elliot Taylor playing off 20, producing perhaps his personal best score with an excellent five under - net 65.
Elliot, just 15 years old, not only won the cup but of course was the recipient of a handicap reduction.
Karen Sturges, one of his playing group, remarked he was a very worthy winner, who had played with good manners and had respect and a great attitude for the game.
Dave Pomphrey, for the best net score returned by a player over 65 years old, with a net 70, won the Keith Ash Trophy.
