First published in Sport

With the majority of promotion and relegation issues already settled in the Basingstoke and District Tennis League, the remaining matches at the end of the season were mainly for the minor placings.

In the Men’s Division One however, it was left until the final game with Andover A retaining their title after a 6-2 win against previous leaders RSF A with Hallam Doney and Martyn Isherwood getting a maximum for the champions.

RSF A slipped a further place after the Kingsclere A team of Daniel Cole/Steve Mills and Chris Pearce/David Giles won their final match 8-0 at Aldermaston A to move them into the runners-up spot.

Old Basing A had already secured the Division 2 title with RSF B as runners- up.

The final match in the division saw Preston Candover beat Beechdown A 5-with Steve Grove and Iain Miller winning all their sets. In Division 3 Andover B took the honours with Waverley A runners-up. Andover won their final match 8-0 against Odiham A while Oakley B secured their first win of the season with a 7-1 score against Beechdown B thanks to a maximum from Chris Wong and Paul Rattue.

Three teams finished on the same number of points in Division 4 with Mortimer winning the division on sets won. Odiham B were second after slipping to a 6-2 defeat at the hands of BDH in their final match where Dave Burrell and Andy Wallace were unbeaten for BDH. Oakley C took third place. Hampshire Court won Division 5 in their first season in the league They looked like having an unbeaten record until their final match when they went down 5-3 at Sherborne with Andover C in second place.

Newbury won their final match 7-1 against Aldermaston B with David Bilton and Leo Perrotta getting a maximum and the Worthy Park team of Giles Greenfield/Rick Pomeroy and Nick Sellick/Simon Hanley secured their first win in their final match with an 8-0 score against Aldermaston B.

All the Ladies’ positions were already decided with Beechdown A taking the Division 1 title, Odiham Division 2 and Andover Division 3.

In the Mixed League, the Division 1 title had already been secured by Old Basing A and the only issue in Division 2 was who would be runners-up to winners Oakley A. That position was taken by Totally Tennis A after they won their final match 6-2 against Preston Candover A.

Despite Mortimer A winning their last match 8-0 at Hook B in Division 3 it was not enough for them to win the title from RSF B and they had to settle for runners-up position. Their team in the match was made up of Andrew Richardson/Jo Jones and David Thomas/Helen Townsend.

Beechdown D maintained their 100 per cent record in Division 4 after a 7-1 win in their last match with Phil Banfield and Aly Coughlan being unbeaten. Aldermaston B took runners-up spot after they beat previous holders Oakley C 8-0 thanks to their team of Carol Huddlestone/John McLarty and Antonia Durrant/Colin Bennett. Oakley C drew with Mortimer B and Odiham C secured a first win with a 5-3 success at Sherborne.
