Career best Nicel sets up Clatford win

Andover Advertiser: Career best Nicel sets up Clatford win Career best Nicel sets up Clatford win

OT and Romsey IV v Upper Clatford.

Saturday was no different to the rest of the season so far with lovely weather all week making way for rain and it looked as if the weather was going to foil Upper Clatford once again.

Having lost the toss and asked to bat on a damp pitch scoring runs for the opening pair of Justin Nicel and Neil Rennie were at a premium even on the small but picturesque ground at East Tytherley.

Slowly but surely through the light drizzle that seemed to fall for more than half an hour and threaten the game, Nicel particularly got on top and started to push on.

Rennie was first to go although a patient knock of 13 out of a 128 first wicket stand was worth more than it looked on paper.

Captain Adrian Harding (21), Matt Glenn (8) and Tony Boakes (15) brought them to a creditable 240-6 after the allotted 42 overs with Nicel finally out for a career best 146.

The Romsey reply didn't get off to the best of starts losing the first wicket at eight to Matt Glenn (1-52). Captain Chris Hodder (104) went about the bowling as Nicel had done earlier and looked to be winning the game but then played on to Sam Harding (1-30) and that was almost the end of the run chase.

Southwood took 3-53 and Nicel completed a very good day’s work with 2-45 from ten overs but Romsey chipped away at the score to leave them needing 39 from five overs.

Clatford defended in bright sunshine with some good catching and fieldwork and with two wickets left Romsey just didn't have enough and Clatford took another to pick up 23 points for a well deserved victory.
