A DRAMATIC late equaliser by Scott Hassell earned Whitchurch United a much needed point as they drew 2-2 with fellow league stragglers Fawley A.F.C.

The defender headed home a Jack McCarthy cross with just 15 seconds remaining to earn an important away point for the Jam Boys, who had to fight back from two goals down.

Whitchurch went 1-0 down after 25 minutes when Daniel Fry was sent through on goal with a splitting pass from midfield.

The striker calmly rounded goalkeeper Brad Snelling before comfortably finishing to give Fawley the lead.

10 minutes later the home side doubled their advantage when a cross from the halfway line was met by Jordan Mellor, whose headed effort from outside the area lobbed Snelling to put Fawley 2-0 up.

Whitchurch came firing out of the blocks in the second half and pulled one back just two minutes after the restart through a Danny Phillips penalty.

The in-form striker, who has bagged 16 goals already this season, calmly dispatched the spot kick after Jack McCarthy was judged to have been brought down in the penalty area.

The Jam Boys pushed hard for an equaliser and had two good chances from Phillips and Maunders, with the later forcing a stunning save from Michael Edgar.

Whitchurch finally made the breakthrough with just 15 seconds of the game remaining when Scott Hassell beat his man to a deep McCarthy cross and powered home a header to level the score at 2-2.

The result means 19th placed Whitchurch move level on points with Bournemouth Poppies, who sit one place above them due to a superior goal difference.

Whitchurch face another important match when they play 5th placed Sholing at home on Wednesday night.
