WHITCHURCH hosted travel shy Seacourt without top player Alex Melkonian which meant several players were stepping up and so hopes of victory were high.

Disappointingly at five Al Painter was early to the bar as his opponent didn’t show and Vet captain Rob King had a confidence boosting victory 3-0 at four.

Improving Nathan Routley at three had a bloodless 3-0 victory and his player ranking continues to increase.

The best matches were the top games as captain Dave Adamson at two, playing a much higher ranked and useful opponent, narrowly lost the third game 10-9 to trail 1-2, but fought back to win the fourth and level 2-2.

The final game was even between two tired players and Dave tried hard but eventually succumbed 9-7.

At one Brett Farmer was also playing a higher rated player and had a close tussle.

Despite losing two games in a tie-break, Farmer’s skill and determination won him the decider 9-6. Overall a 4-1 win with almost maximum points and still top of the league.

The match at Southampton University was a much more energetic fixture played on a very warm and fast court.

At five Mike Strong faced a higher ranked, faster and hard hitting opponent who powered through the first game and half the second before Strong started competing but then forcing a tie-break which he won to level. The scores were again level as two tired players fought out the decider, Strong relying on guile and experience while the student was getting frustrated and quickly capitulated losing 9-0.

At four Nathan coasted to another easy 3-0 while captain Dave Adamson at three, playing a similar style and equally ranked player, had an off day, never really on song losing 3-0.

At two Brett Farmer had too much class and skill despite losing the first game for a solid 3-1 win and it was a similar story at one with Alex Melkonian in a competitive and equally matched game losing the first but coming back to win 3-1.

Both players made some incredible recoveries during several compelling rallies.

Captain Dave was pleased with the team effort for another 4-1 win and 17 league points keeping Whitchurch top of the league.
