THE prospect of Andover having a second mega-shed employing 900 people might seem good news – but is it?

Firstly, there will be all the extra lorries. Secondly, although Andover is planning on having a few thousand new houses over the coming years, TVBC’s own reports show that the rise in working-age population will be quite modest so there is not a desperate need for new jobs just now. Thirdly, how many more people are going to want jobs in warehousing when there is already one mega-shed in place?

Finally, it must once again be asked if these are the sort of new jobs Andover needs if it aims to raise its general level of education and skill?

It could be in everyone’s interest if Goodman were encouraged by TVBC to look for an entirely new use for this land. For example, Andover College says it is looking for new and larger premises, so would this not be an ideal location?
