I WOULD like to start a debate on the interesting issue as to whether there should be restrictions on individuals sitting on more than one council at the same time to prevent possible conflicts of loyalty.

There is a risk of important meetings coinciding and what might be in the interests of one set of constituents might not be advantageous to the others.

It would therefore be interesting to hear the views of other workers, constituents and non-constituents alike.

Secondly, earlier in the year, when I asked readers who they thought were the greatest authors of the 20th century, Mr Bowman of Elbe Court suggested Aldous Huxley.

But I believe one seriously neglected author is Warwick Deeping, whose work Sorrell and Son captures the period between the two great wars – his well-described characters such as Mrs Palfrey, the cold and humourless pub landlady – we’ve all met one or two, haven’t we?

Some of his books should be available through the public library service.

Deeping and others such as the ghost story writer Algernon Blackwood deserve to be better remembered!
