I WRITE in response to Mr Porter’s letter (July 10) regarding the wretch that used to stand at the window of the old Andover Jail House.

The wretch certainly seemed to stir up some ‘Marmite’ opinions from the people of Andover. Some found him an amusing and unique quirk for the town, while others found his presence a little odd! Whichever view your readers side with, it’s fair to say that the wretch had served his time behind bars.

The council’s Andover Summit project is behind the wretch’s route to freedom.

He was released back in 2013 when the cell was cleared and tidied as part of a string of initiatives to enhance the area. He doesn’t intend to make a return. After all, he’s now moved on and is happy to leave his past behind him.

I do hope he stays on the right side of the law in future.

Councillor Ian Carr Leader, Test Valley Borough Council
