RE John Porter’s Winchester Road history.
I did know that the Winchester Road area was known for brick making.
I once saw a map of that same area showing Old Winton Road before houses were built along it. This was pre- WWI and on the RHS going from town was a firing range for local volunteer regimental training.
This would have been set in lawn and had makers of 100 yard intervals for a distance of 4-500 yards, ending at the top of the road by the steep incline of Bere Hill.
I think John is talking about the Peat Spade at Longstock where maybe the fuel was sourced to fire the kilns.
I looked in the library at a little book The Inns of Andover and found no ‘Peat Spade’.
