I WAS desperately sad to see that on the French-themed evening at The Hawk Conservancy on February 4 next year, visitors are urged to be ‘adventurous’ by trying the frogs legs.
Probably unbeknownst to most, the method for harvesting frogs’ legs is indescribably cruel. I will not go into any detail here, as it would be deeply distressing for readers, but suffice to say the animals are not stunned beforehand, and the mutilated frogs are simply left to die in agony in a heap of other equally mutilated frogs, having had their legs sliced off. There is absolutely nothing adventurous or delicious about a plate of frogs’ legs. The Hawk Conservancy is about protecting wildlife and respecting creatures’ sentience – frogs deserve just as much respect and care as owls or raptors. I beg The Hawk Conservancy to abandon their plan to serve frogs legs.
For a French-themed evening, a classic Provence ratatouille with crusty baguette, and a tarte tatin for dessert, would be very much more planet-friendly, animal friendly, and infinitely more delicious.
