OVER the years I have read many contributions to this page either applauding our wonderful little shops or exuding the frustration of having to visit neighbouring towns because of lack of choice or availability.

I cannot agree to the repeated idea that a ‘Department Store’ is the answer. By example I compare Debenhams in Southampton, a very large store with plenty of choice but, for the most part empty of customers, be it that I visit weekdays or weekends. The reason being, I suggest, is that there is no footfall. It’s a goodly half-mile march from the warmth, shelter and multitude of shops in the Westquay Shopping Centre and others Above Bar.

I mention this because it reflects the downside of shopping in our own fair town.

Yes, we do have some remaining good shops, but they are scattered from Bridge Street to Enham Arch or in outlying garden centres. Imagine what it would be like were they all easy to reach under one roof and how numerous shoppers would have the place buzzing, creating footfall for the smaller shops and enticing larger ones, even department stores, to come here.

Our Andover doesn’t require a ‘town centre’ with a few stores. It really needs a ‘shopping centre’ with shops!

— so come on councils — get with the times. Where will you put it?
