THE Andover Probus Club met at the Keystone Masonic Hall in February.

After enjoying the usual four-course meal, including roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, the proceedings progressed from courses to horses: members were treated to an excellently illustrated talk by Patrick Kemp on ‘Lorenzo and His Amazing Horses’.

Lorenzo, known as ‘The Flying Frenchman’, was born in the Camargue area of southern France. He began training Camargue horses as a teenager but moved on to the grey Portuguese Lusitano horses, later adding some blacks, with which he performs today.

The horses react to their names and carry out his quiet, simple commands to perfection. Dressed in white, and standing on the backs of two of his charges, he can control up to 18 bridle less horses at a time, taking jumps and carrying out complex manoeuvres.

He has taken part in shows in the UK, France and Germany and recently in Bahrain. He performed at the 2016 Yorkshire show before Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. Whether one is a ‘horsey’ person or not this is a superb display of physical fitness and horsemanship which is not to be missed. Try his web site which has video clips of his extraordinary feats.

The club will meet next for its annual meeting, lunch and a talk by member Norval Young on ‘A Career in the Merchant Navy’ on 27 March. For anyone interested in joining the club it is simply a matter of ringing committee member Barrie Johnson on 01264 337479 or going onto the club’s web site. You can be assured of a good lunch and good company.
