Pilot killed as replica First World War plane crashes

9:30am Monday 29th April 2013

A PLANE which came down in a field in Hampshire killing the pilot was taking part in a practice display of replica First World War aircraft. Investigators were today continuing their examination of the scene to establish why the small aircraft crashed at the Army Aviation Centre in Middle Wallop. Police  said the pilot, a 68-year-old man from Horsham, West Sussex, was the only person on board. He was pronounced dead at the scene.  His aircraft was a single engine, single wing replica First World War aircraft, which was involved in a group practice display at the time. The crash, at 4.55pm on Saturday, is being investigated jointly by Hampshire Police and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), based in Aldershot. Witness Nick Bayes, from Andover, said he saw about 12 planes in the air when the accident happened, some of which seemed to him to be flying close together. He said: “I was returning home and saw a large number of replica aircraft doing circuits over the airfield. There were maybe a dozen or so in the air. “It was unusual because they were so close together. If it was not a display itself, it looked like they were practising for a display.” Mr Bayes said that he did not see the crash itself but he saw smoke coming from where the aircraft came down. He added: “The whole incident is very tragic.” A spokesman for AAIB said: “The branch is aware of the incident and inspectors are investigating.” A Hampshire Police spokesman confirmed that the aircraft had been taking part in a practice display at the time of the crash. Anyone who saw the crash or the plane flying immediately beforehand should contact Hampshire police on 101.

Four staddle stone tops were also stolen from the property on Monday night. The value of the stolen property is not known as yet, say police. Inspector Jackie Willson, from Romsey Police, advised people to fit security devices to all oil tanks. “They should fit a float on their oil tanks. It has a sensor alarm and will detect if levels in the tank fall rapidly,” said Inspector Willson. She also warned the public to report any suspicious activity immediately. Thousands of pounds worth of domestic fuel oil has been stolen in the Test Valley since the beginning of the year.
